Introduction to FinTech Forum
Disintermediation and disruptions are becoming regular occurrence from AirBnB, Alibaba, Facebook to Uber, we have seen the industry landscape continuously being disrupted by new disruptors that leverage technology to enable new business models and transactions; the same could also happen to financial and capital market participants, who are not prepared to take advantage of emerging technology and developments. The FinTech industry is facing high competition with new entrants challenging incumbents with new business models and technology.  In fact, according to Accentures research Asia-Pacific FinTech investments have seen rapidly growth in 2015 reaching over 3,464 million USD almost quadruple 2014’s investments of 879 million USD.
The SEC is aware of the accelerated technology disruption and is concerned with Thailand capital markets ability to stay competitive with the global economy.  As a result, it is in our best interests to promote awareness of disruptive technology and business models to the incumbents.  While facilitating innovative financial products or services that leverage technology that provide cost effective, timely and secured products or services, by creating “Fintech Forum”, a channel for sharing, discussing, consulting by inviting Academics, Startups, Incumbents and Regulators together to share their ideas and work together to align with the governments digital economy initiatives.

FinTech Forum: FinTech Ecosystem
Advances in mobile network infrastructure have opened up opportunities for innovators to take advantages from the connected world which allows information gathering from Internet-of-Thingssensors (IoT), and the ability to provide personalized and customer centric services through internet connected devices.  Coupling with myriads of data sources and massive amount of data available, Machine Learning Algorithms can be leveraged to provide innovative services to customers. Especially, in the financial and investment sector where business revolves around offering services rather than production of physical goods. Additionally, the fact that the financial and investment sector occupies a major part of the GDP incentivizes more startups to innovate in FinTech. This has resulted in massive investments and active development in the FinTech sector. Nevertheless, FinTech Startups with their ability to freely innovate rapidly, faces difficulties in acquiring customers and complying with the regulatory standards. As a result, there is a clear emerging trend of Co-petition (co-operation and competition) among the incumbents from financial, investment and telecom sectors working with startups to leverage the best from both worlds.
Meanwhile, developments in FinTech have been very active on the international scene. A research conducted by Business Insider shows that regulatory uncertainty is still a major challenge in FinTech innovation. Realizing they are the major roadblocks to innovations, regulators and financial & investment sector are actively funding and participate in Startups incubations. Regulators are also becoming more open to help reduce regulatory burdens while protecting the publics benefits; by working with the innovators in sandboxed environments, which allows the innovators to try out their ideas and help regulators discover potential regulatory issues at an early stage. Furthermore, some regulators even provide tax benefits for the innovators as a mean to attract and retain FinTech talents and skills.

FinTech Forum: Payment System Innovations

Payment systems are the pillars of digital economy without a payment method that is also user-friendly, secured and efficient, it would be insurmountable to enable an effective digital economy. The SEC realizes that Payment Systems are the core enabler that allows other financial products and services to grow in Thailands FinTech landscape. With over 83 million mobile subscriptions and growing, Thailand has more mobile subscriptions than its population. This is an incredible opportunity for innovative products or services to tap into previously unreachable customers via mobile devices, whom would otherwise remain unbanked customers; serving the unserved and potentially achieving financial inclusion.
