Bangkok, 14 December 2020 – The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) together with Prosperity Fund of United Kingdom, under ASEAN Low Carbon Energy Programme (ALCEP) and EY Corporate Services Limited (Singapore) hold an online seminar on “Introduction to Climate Risk Disclosure.” This online seminar aims to raise awareness of listed companies and asset management companies in Thailand about the risks and effects of climate change towards business operations, provide guidelines on disclosure thereof which in line with international standards, and enhance the sustainable development goals of Thai capital market.

In her opening remarks at the online seminar on 25 November 2020, Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol, Secretary-General of SEC, stated: “The aims of the online seminar are (1) to help listed companies gain a better understanding of climate risks so that they can combine their knowledge and relevant available information to enhance their capability to deal with climate change; (2) to make asset management companies, as an institutional investor, understand the risks and effects of climate change on business operations; and (3) to promote role of Thai capital market as one of the driving force to help country achieve its sustainable development goals (SDGs).

“Earlier, SEC has amended the regulations on 56-1 One Report to promote the level of disclosure about sustainability (Environmental, Social and Governance or ESG) of listed companies by making greenhouse gas emission be one of the disclosure issues in which listed companies would state its intention of doing business with ESG and investors can take that information into account when making investment decisions. SEC hopes that this online seminar will benefit all listed companies, whether they are already in process of preparing such disclosure in 56-1 One Report or they aspire to promote their disclosure level to catch up with the international standards and aim to lead their business to the sustainable growth.” said General-Secretary of SEC.

Mr. Andrew Byrne, Economic and Prosperity Plan Advisor of the British Embassy in Thailand said: “The awareness of risks from climate, which will significantly affect business section, is an opportunity for business to adapt towards sustainability using technology advancement and also the changes in resources demands during COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, stakeholders, such as investors, regulators, and credit rating agencies in various countries, also help to promote this climate risk disclosure into practical use. For example, by 2025, England has a plan to make all sectors in economic system, especially big companies and financial institutions, inevitably disclose the impacts on climate in accordance with Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) which has four main aspects. The four main aspects are (1) defining a governance structure, (2) integrating with organization strategic plans, (3) risk management, and (4) setting metrics and targets. Therefore, the disclosure in accordance with TCFD will be beneficial to Thai business sectors in the global stage.”
