SEC updates Digital Asset Regulatory Sandbox progress amid private sector interest

Monday 24 February 2025 | No. 38 / 2025

Bangkok, 24 February 2025 – The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has updated the progress on the Digital Asset Regulatory Sandbox project that is aimed to support innovations of digital asset businesses to enhance their service variety. The Sandbox has been opened for interested parties’ participation and testing of their innovative digital asset-related services. So far, there are seven applicants for Sandbox participation and testing, who are under discussion with the SEC, in addition to the first applicant who was qualified and already approved for participation in the project in 2024.

Following the SEC launch of Digital Asset Regulatory Sandbox project in August 2024, which has been available for interested parties to participate and test their innovations for the provision of digital asset-related services, one business operator, i.e., SCB 10X Co., Ltd. (SCB 10X) was approved to launch digital wallet services to facilitate cryptocurrency exchanges for domestic use of foreign tourists. Such services were tested under the framework of SEC Regulatory Sandbox and the Bank of Thailand (BOT)’s Programmable Payment Sandbox.

At present, there are seven applicants who expressed their interest in the innovations testing under the Sandbox framework, four of which apply for the testing under both the frameworks of the SEC and the BOT, while the other three apply for the testing specifically under the SEC framework.

The innovations developed by those four applicants who apply for the testing under both Sandbox frameworks, payment and digital asset services, are those involving the provision of services, using programmable payment solutions, in relation to cryptocurrency tourist wallet, cryptocurrency trading, and digital token trading.

Those interested in introducing innovations for the provision of digital asset-related services in the capital market are invited to take part in the Sandbox project.
