Friday 29 September 2023 | No. 170 / 2023

Bangkok, 29 September 2023 – The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Thailand is going to join the IOSCO World Investor Week (WIW) 2023 campaign under the theme “Knowledgeable Investing Will Bring About Financial Resilience”. This participation is to reiterate our commitment to promoting financial education and investor protection in Thailand. Educational initiatives and activities through various media channels during the week of 2-8 October 2023 will highlight key messages on knowledgeable investing and protecting oneself from falling victim to frauds and scams.

Under the IOSCO guidelines, international regulatory agencies jointly promote and endorse the financial education and investor protection campaign during the first week of October each year. The SEC Thailand has consecutively taken part in this global event since 2017, reflecting our organization’s dedication to enhance the public’s capital market investment knowledge and digital financial literacy, while ensuring investor protection. These efforts aim to build financial resilience and financial well-being for the people, especially during their retirement years, in line with the WIW 2023 main themes adopted by the IOSCO.

Mrs. Pornanong Budsaratragoon, SEC Secretary-General, said: “As one of the SEC’s key missions is to promote financial stability for sustainable well-being of the Thai people, provision of adequate and accurate financial knowledge and information for their proper decision-making is crucial, particularly in today’s investment world where advanced technology enables easy and instant access to a wide variety of investment options, including those innovative ones. In addition, publicity of alerts and warnings to raise awareness and educate people about financial frauds and scams, in new and old forms, is also essential. Insightful investment knowledge will help investors take precautions and protect themselves from falling victim to those fraudsters and scammers and thus reduce investment risks to a certain degree.”

During the campaign week, the SEC Thailand will reach out to the general public through the launch of a series of educational motion graphics and infographics with the key messages under the afore-mentioned theme. The series, consisting of the following seven episodes, will be released one episode per day in chronological order:

(1)    Basic investment knowledge;

(2)    Understanding investment products;

(3)    Understanding digital assets and related risks;

(4)    Investment diversification and monitoring;

(5)    Understanding digital financial technology that enables investment accessibility;

(6)    Five red flags of “exaggeration” to look out for when solicited to invest;

(7)    Getting to know the “Scam Center”, a knowledge hub for prevention of financial frauds and scams.
