SEC joins Asia-Pacific and EU capital market regulators’ forums

Bangkok, 7 March 2024 – The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) participated in the IOSCO Asia-Pacific Regional Committee (APRC) meeting, EU-Asia Pacific Regulatory Forum, SFC Regional Securities Regulatory Leadership Symposium and ASIFMA Gala Dinner held in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) from 26 February to 1 March 2024. At the meetings, senior securities regulators and top executives from private sector discussed and exchanged views on the challenges of capital market supervision and development as well as highlighted the importance of strengthening cooperation between Asia-Pacific and EU.

Mrs. Pornanong Budsaratragoon, SEC Secretary-General, joined the panel on “Intersection of Fintech and AI in Wealth Management” in the SFC Symposium organized on 28 February 2024, and shared the supervisory framework for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning in the Thai capital market. The framework is in line with the International Organization of Securities Commissions: IOSCO standards, and designed to attain four regulatory objectives,  which are fairness, compliance with laws and ethics, responsibility, and transparency. At the ASIFMA Gala Dinner held before the ASIFMA Annual Conference, the Thai SEC Secretary-General gave the opening speech for the event, in which she remarked the benefits of AI in enhancing accessibility to the capital market and Thailand’s commitment towards net-zero greenhouse gas emission goals.

In the APRC meeting and EU-Asia Pacific Regulatory Forum, which the SEC Secretary-General and management team took part, member regulators shared their insights and experiences on supervision, enforcement, cooperation for addressing risks and challenges in relation to virtual assets, online harms, greenwashing, and market manipulation.

The forums also discussed regional opportunities and threats, e.g. Fintech, sustainable finance, SME accessibility to funding sources, RegTech/SupTech etc. as well as directions for strengthening cooperation for developments towards capital markets’ robustness and sustainability.  

APRC members consist of 33 regulatory and relevant agencies from the Asia-Pacific capital markets in 28 jurisdictions.
