SEC joins the 2024 World Investor Week featuring fun financial literacy activities

Tuesday 15 October 2024 | No. 211 / 2024

Bangkok, 15 October 2024 – The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) joins the global community in promoting financial and investment literacy for investors and the public during the World Investor Week 2024 (WIW 2024) under the theme “Building Confidence in Your Investment.” Fun and educational activities will be offered through the SEC’s online channels, along with new onsite events introduced for the first time this year to enhance accessibility and foster collaboration with capital market business operators. These efforts aim to expand the reach of financial education on a larger scale.

WIW 2024 will be held during October 21 – 27, following the guidelines of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), which encourages global regulators to support the WIW campaign promoting financial literacy and consumer protection. The initiative aims to raise global awareness, in line with the SEC’s efforts to enhance financial literacy, improve technological knowledge and skills in capital market services (digital literacy), and strengthen consumers’ defenses against scams, fraud and cybercrime. This helps investors protect themselves and equips them with tools to verify and make informed investment decisions. The SEC has participated in these global efforts online every year since 2017. This year marks a special milestone with the introduction of onsite activities, offering fun, educating and engaging ways to disseminate knowledge, especially to younger generations. Additionally, the SEC is partnering with business operators in the capital market to promote financial literacy on a broader scale.

Mrs. Pornanong Budsaratragoon, SEC Secretary-General, said: “The SEC will organize activities to promote financial literacy among investors during WIW 2024 under the theme “Building Confidence in Your Investment”. This year, for the first time, we are enhancing cooperation with business operators in the capital market to provide financial and investment knowledge to the general public. Our collaboration aims to empower people and investors with the knowledge and understanding needed to make informed and efficient investment decisions. By doing so, we hope to increase their chances of earning higher returns and building long-term financial stability, leading to an improved quality of life while demonstrating the market’s credibility and stability.

“The SEC is committed to collaborating with market participants to share financial and investment knowledge, empowering Thai people and investors – the core of the capital market – to make informed investment decisions. By deepening their understanding, they can seize opportunities for higher returns and long-term financial stability, ultimately enhancing their quality of life. This dedication reinforces trust and confidence in the Thai capital market,” added Secretary-General.

During the week, the SEC will present media and organize financial literacy activities, created by both the SEC and partnering businesses, to be shared through SEC Facebook Page: Start-To-Invest. The financial and investment knowledge contents cover six topics as follows: (1) Basic Investment, (2) Investment Products, (3) Asset Management, (4) Digital Assets & Digital Finance, (5) Scam Alerts, and (6) Smart Investors - Tips and Tricks.

Moreover, for the first time this year, the SEC will organize an onsite event on Sunday, October 27, at the activity area on the G Floor, Samyan Mitrtown, from 10.00 – 20.00 hours. Activities will include interactive games to promote financial and investment knowledge, allowing attendees to try out simple investment strategies. There will also be panel discussions by guest speakers on the topics, “Getting Fit for Investing to Reach Your Financial Goals” by Mr. Saranyoo Pientumdee from the Beer Buffalo Gags Channel, and “Trust Me, Investing Is More Essential Than You Think” by “Na Nake,” Mr. Katesepsawat Palakawong Na Ayudhaya. These sessions will share experiences, insights, and strategies for financial planning and growing investments. Attendees can also enjoy a mini-concert by Atlas Band artists and performers who will share their experiences in managing finances and investments. The event is open to the general public, free of charge. Those unable to attend in person can watch live streams of the performances and activities by the artists and guest speakers on Facebook Page: Start-To-Invest.
