SEC organizes first caravan to Khon Kaen to provide education about the capital market to encourage SMEs to raise funds

Bangkok, 10 September 2019 - The “SEC Caravan to Provincial Areas” project has officially started with the first visit to Khon Kaen with a seminar entitled “Capital Market Caravan Visits Khon Kaen” according to the policy to promote the roles of SEC to reach out to all target groups of people, with the emphasis on providing education on the capital market and digital assets, creating protection for investors to prevent them from falling victims to investment frauds, and providing information to local SME entrepreneurs to promote the use of the capital market as a source for fundraising.

SEC Secretary General Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol said that after SEC has initiated the “SEC Caravan to Provincial Areas” project in accordance with the capital market development plan which is in line with the National Strategy in the aspect of providing provincial people with the access to financial services and the capital market, including more understanding of SEC’s roles, in 2019 SEC plans to organize events in four provinces, i.e. Khon Kaen, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Udon Thani and Chiang Mai. The first event was held in Khon Kaen under a seminar called “Capital Market Caravan Visits Khon Kaen,” which was honorarily presided over by Khon Kaen Governor Mr. Somsak Jungtrakul, Ph.D., who gave an opening speech, on Tuesday 10 September 2019, at Avani Khon Kaen Hotel & Convention Center.

“SEC Caravan chose to hold its first activity in Khon Kaen as it is a large province in the northeastern region with economic potential and which is also the model province with digital development under the Khon Kaen Smart City Project under which technology is applied to develop the city’s internal management systems such as the public transport system. As a result, it is one of the provinces with high potential to support businesses to access the capital market. In addition, we will cooperate locally with Khon Kaen and authorities in the economic sector in Khon Kaen, consisting of the Khon Kaen Chamber of Commerce, the Khon Kaen Industry Council, the Society of Khonkaen Province Bank and the Federation of Thai SME Association,” said SEC Secretary-General.

The “Capital Market Caravan Visits Khon Kaen” seminar’s morning session involved a lecture given by, SEC Deputy Secretary-General Sirivipa Supantanet, to provide knowledge about the capital market which can be accessed by business operators and investors, and a talk about four aspects of knowledge about digital assets, a new subject receiving interest from the public. SEC Assistant Secretary-General Praoporn Senanarong, discussed an overview of the digital asset markets both in the country and overseas, including the progress after the Emergency Decree on Digital Assets Business Operation, B.E. 2561 (2018) has been in force for over a year. Director of Corporate Communication and Investor Service Department Pariya Techamuanvivit, provided advice for investors and warned them of investment frauds and the seminar was moderated by Director of Capital Market Education and Provincial Network Department, Sarica Apiwatthakakul.

The afternoon session covered a talk entitled “SME Path towards the Thai Capital Market.” During the session, business operators shared their experience in preparing to enter the capital market, namely Mr. Boonyong Tansakul., Chief Executive Officer of Zen Corporation Group Public Company Limited, Mr. Rakti Yuankratok, Chairman of the Federation of Thai SME Association, Northeastern Region, and Mr. Suradech Taweesaengsakulthai, Chief Executive Officer of Khon Kaen City Development (KKTT) Co., Ltd. Director of Corporate Finance Department 3 Madasiree Sunthornyotin, provided additional information on the criteria for raising funds for SMEs. Simultaneously, SEC also arranged a clinic offering suggestions and advice to local business groups interested in using the capital market as a source for fundraising for business expansion.
