SEC and NHRC to hold a seminar to promote business and human rights among listed companies

Bangkok, Friday 24 May 2019 - SEC and the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand (NHRC) will hold a national seminar on “Human Rights: Driving Thai Listed Companies’ Competitiveness toward Sustainability”, based on the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs).

Tuesday 21 May 2019, Mr. What Tingsamit, Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand; Mrs. Prakairatana Thontiravong, NHRC Commissioner in charge of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR) and Chairperson of Business and Human Rights (BHR) Working Group; Mr. Boongua Somnuk, Deputy Secretary-General of the National Human Rights Commission and BHR Working Group Officers, NHRC, held meeting no. 2/2019 with SEC Secretary-General Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol, and Director of Corporate Governance Department Somsuda Tanchanpongs, to discuss the preparation of a national seminar titled “Human Rights: Driving Thai Listed Companies’ Competitiveness toward Sustainability”, based on the UNGPs. The seminar will be held on 31 May 2019 at 8.30 – 13.30 hrs. at Grand Ballroom 1-2, Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel, Bangkok.  

At the said seminar, SEC and NHRC will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to encourage listed companies, corporate issuers, or business operators under the supervision of SEC, to have awareness of operating business with good governance, social and environmental responsibilities and respect for human rights. The priority will be given to the application of the UNGPs in order to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs). In addition, a special talk will be delivered by Dr. Surya Deva, Chair of the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights on Exploring Respect for Human Rights as a Driver for Business Action on Sustainable Development”. The seminar will conclude with  a panel discussion on Trends and Directions of Human Rights Issues in Thai Capital Market Sectorby Mrs. Prakairatana Thontiravong, Miss Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol, Mr. Suphachai Chearavanont, President of Global Compact Network Thailand (GCNT), Mrs. Oranuch Apisaksirikul, Chairperson of Thai Listed Companies Association, and Mrs. Attapan Masrungson, Advisor of Thai Tuna Industry Association.
