This seminar hold at Rama Garden Hotel, Bangkok, on 23 November 2020.

Ruenvadee Suwanmongkol, Secretary-General of SEC, remarked: “The enhancement of shareholders’ rights and protections is SEC’s main mission. Scaling up the legal knowledge regarding securities and exchange act and class action litigation on securities fraud to lawyers will strengthen legal remedies available for defrauded investors in capital market. Therefore, SEC joins hand with Lawyers Council under Royal Patronage to help lawyers sharpen their capability about class action in capital market cases so that they will be able to deliver justice for investors who were wronged by persons that went against securities and exchange law.

This seminar is the starting point to help lawyers to be preparedness and extend their ability to advocate or advise investors on legal requirements and procedures in class action litigation. It also intends to increase investors’ awareness of their legal rights to claim for remedies from those who broke the laws and caused them harm.”

Acting Sub Lt. Dr. Thawan Ruyaporn, President of Lawyers Council of Thailand under the Royal Patronage noted: “Lawyers Act, B.E. 2528 states that one of the important objectives of Lawyers Council under Royal Patronage is to promote, assist, advise, and educate public about legal matters. The Council, therefore, set up a Committee to provide legal assistance to public. It is the mission of Lawyers Council to provide assistance to people who are hapless or are treated unfairly. The assistances consist of (1) providing legal aids to people who needed at official places, such as court, police stations, and other government places as well as at the office of Lawyers Council under Royal Patronage and (2) providing legal aids in civil case, criminal cases, human rights protection, administrative order, environmental protection, consumer protection, and dispute resolution.

Providing legal assistance to defrauded investors in capital market is equal to providing protection for public interest. The wrongful acts in the capital market can cause broad impact and hurt the economy which in turn affect development of the country. It can also bring damages to people in all walks of life. Lawyers Council under Royal Patronage, thus, plan to train pro bono lawyers with a skill in class action litigation in order to enhance the efficiency of justice. Since class action is the way many defrauded investors can settle their claims in one lawsuit.
