Prof. Pornanong Budsaratragoon, Ph.D., Secretary-General of the
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), participated in a high-level panel
discussion titled “The Next Generation of Capital Markets: AI, Digitalization
and the Future of Finance,” organized by the International Organization of
Securities Commissions (IOSCO) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The panel
also included representatives from Commissione Nazionale per le Società e la
Borsa (Consob) of Italy and the Asia Securities Industry & Financial
Markets Association (ASIFMA), who exchanged views on the role of technology in
shaping the future direction of capital markets. The event was held at
Courtyard by Marriott Bangkok Sukhumvit 20, Bangkok, on 15 October 2026.
The SEC Secretary-General also noted that the use of
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become part of the capital market, including
in investment services, risk management, regulatory compliance, and customer
service, alongside the need to manage risks related to transparency and
cybersecurity to maintain market confidence. Regulators must therefore strike a
balance between promoting innovation and protecting investors to enhance
regulatory effectiveness.
In addition, digitalization and
tokenization can help reduce costs, broaden access to the capital market for
investors and the public, and strengthen market infrastructure. These
developments are built on trust, investor protection, good governance, and transparency,
alongside efforts to promote collaboration at both the domestic and
international levels, including through IOSCO, APRC, and ACMF, to support the
sustainable growth of the capital market.
“The success of the capital market is not measured
by how quickly technology can be adopted, but by the ability to bring together
Innovation, Resilience and Trust to support the sustainable growth of the
capital market,” the SEC Secretary-General said.
